Sample Intern Seminar Sequence

“Courses” in Reach do not resemble traditional college classroom style courses. Instead, each of the seminar & practicums described below combine small group seminars, job-embedded application, online work and collaboration, and gathering evidence of practice. Seminars are taken sequentially, with participating teachers typically focusing on one topic for approximately a month before moving on to the next topic. Additionally, the seminars spiral, returning to similar themes repeatedly, each time with greater depth and a different perspective.


The following is a sample of a seminar sequence through the program. Please note: your actual sequence is likely to vary depending on your needs and the needs of our cohort:


Internship Year 1 Summer Pre-Service:

150 - Introduction To Teaching as Leadership (10 Units)

  1. Elements: 45 hours practicum, 60 hours institute, 5 hours one-on-one, and 50 hours online/independent

  2. Assessment: UbD Unit

  3. Topics Include:

  4. Standards for the Teaching Profession

  5. Teaching as Leadership

  6. Intro to Methods: English Learners Content Standards, Healthy Environments & Classroom Community


Internship Year 1 Fall:

160 - Developmental Learning: Planning & Pedagogy (6 Units)

  1. Elements: 36 hours seminars (12 sessions), 36 hours one-on-one & practicum, and 18 hours assignments/online collaboration

  2. Assessment: TPA Task 1

  3. Topics Include:

  4. Building Classroom Community

  5. Subject Specific Content & Pedagogy

  6. Literacy

  7. How People Learn


Internship Year 1 Spring:

170 - Equity and Access

  1. Elements: 36 hours seminars (12 sessions), 36 hours one-on-one & practicum, and 18 hours assignments/online collaboration

  2. Assessment: TPA Task 2

  3. Topics Include:

  4. Differentiation

  5. Equity & Diversity

  6. ELL

  7. Sped


Internship Year 2 Fall:

250 - Knowing Students and Assessing Learning (6 Units)

  1. Elements: 36 hours seminars (12 sessions), 36 hours one-on-one & practicum, and 18 hours assignments/online collaboration

  2. Assessment: TPA Task 3

  3. Topics Include:

  4. Standards for the Teaching Profession (revisited)

  5. Teaching as Leadership (revisited)

  6. Healthy Child/ youth development

  7. Designing Assessment

  8. Standardized Assessments


Internship Year 2 Spring:

260 - Demonstrating Teacher Performance 6 Units

  1. Elements: 36 hours seminars (12 sessions), 36 hours one-on-one & practicum, and 18 hours assignments/online collaboration

  2. Assessment: TPA Task 4

  3. Topics Include:

  4. Technology

  5. Demonstrating teaching

  6. Reflection on teacher leadership for social change

  7. Professional portfolio and panel presentation
